Hello and welcome back to the blog, Today we will look at What Is A 2.1 G.P.A In Nigeria?
Looking back at the history of a country like Nigeria, its educational sector has been through a lot of ups and downs.
From having free education given out to some, if not most, of the current wave of society’s elite to paying exorbitant amounts and “greasing palms” to gain admission into the university.
It’s no wonder why some top officials in Nigeria are lacking when it comes to basic and effective communication in the English Language – a universal language.
This is basically what graduating from a university with a 2.1 G.P.A translates to in present-day Nigeria.
In this article, I will talk about what a 2.1 G.P.A is and what it means in Nigeria.
What is GPA
Before we get into What Is A 2.1 G.P.A In Nigeria, let’s look at GPA itself.
The Grade Point Average (G.P.A) is one of many grading systems employed by educational institutions worldwide to assess the capability of students who submit themselves to learn from these institutions.
This assessment is not only of an individual’s capacity to learn as a sentient being but also to determine whether or not such a person is of sound mind.
It is often believed that only those with sound minds are able to score high G.P.As.
Grading in education refers to the application of international standards to measure students’ achievements in studying their various disciplines.
In 2017, the National Universities Commission (NUC) directed universities to adopt the four-point grade system.
For the 2018/19 academic session, however, the NUC, to raise the educational standard in the country, approved the five-point grading scale and directed all universities to adopt it. Some did, and others didn’t, thereby leading to the lack of uniformity in the grading system in Nigeria.
Using the five-point grading scale, degree classification is as follows:
- First Class Honours: 4.50 – 5.00
- Second Class Honours( Upper Division): 3.50 – 4.49
- Second Class Honours( Lower Division): 2.40 – 3.99
- Third Class Honours: 1.50 – 2.39
- Pass degree: 1.00 – 1.49 (students who have less than a 1.00 G.P.A are often advised to leave that particular course of study or withdraw from the university)
What Is A 2.1 GPA In Nigeria
In calculating a student’s G.P.A., the total points are divided by the total number of units they offer.
For example. If a student gets a total of 20 points in a semester and offers 4 courses in all, to get the G.P.A.
We divide the 20 by 4, which gives us a 5.0 G.P.A.
So, under the five-point grading system, to have a 2.1 degree in G.P.A. format, the student must have been getting a majority of C grades in their exams which translates to a third class.
